Jess Park's 33rd-minute strike ensured England gained a measure of revenge for their 2023 World Cup final defeat to La Roja, moving to four points from two games in Group A3.

Spain started the stronger of the two sides, but England soon wrestled back control at Wembley Stadium, with Park pouncing on the rebound of Alessia Russo's effort.

Lucia Garcia struck the crossbar early on, while Salma Paralluelo had chances to level in the second half, but England held on.

The Lionesses entered Wednesday's game having only won two of their last six games, producing a drab display in a 1-1 draw with Portugal in their Nations League opener on Friday.

But just as Wiegman was not getting too low during that run, she will not get too high after this statement victory.

"Of course, it helps. Winning always helps," Wiegman told ITV Sport when asked if the win would boost England's confidence. 

"We also know where we want to go to, where we are and what we're working on.

"When we win it's not always that all things are good, and when we don't win it's not always that everything is bad. We just want to improve every single day.

"There were a lot of improvements. The best thing was the togetherness and fight we put in. Next time when we go and play Belgium, it will be another game, but we want to take it to the next level."

Manchester City winger Park was asked if her goal was the biggest of her career, responding: "Probably! 

"It was a brilliant feeling and I don't think there's anything like it, so I'm really happy with that. I don't think I'll ever forget it."

Park was not part of England's Euro 2022-winning squad or the group that finished as runners-up at the World Cup the following year, but after an impressive season in the Women's Super League, she hopes to be involved at Euro 2025 in Switzerland.

"I'll keep working hard at my club, I'll keep doing what I'm trying to do on the pitch, and I'll give everything to be there," Park said.

Spain coach Montse Tome, meanwhile, lamented her team's poor finishing as she said: "We started the game very well, played at a good tempo. 

"We didn't manage to score, and we don't get any points tonight. We had chances that we simply didn't take. That's an area we need to improve on and we will improve. 

"England could have scored more. England scored their goal8kg, we didn't, and we just need to keep improving for the next game."
